What information does a microchip store?

Microchips store your pet’s information and your contact information. When a lost pet is recovered, a veterinarian or shelter can use a handheld scanner to detect a microchip. The microchip provides a serial number connected to a manufacturer, who can be contacted to recover your contact information. You cannot be contacted if your pet is found without registering a microchip to a pet recovery database.

Does my pet need surgery to get microchipped?

Though your pet can get microchipped while having surgery, it’s not necessary to be implanted. Microchips can be implanted during a regular visit. Your pet won’t need to be sedated or put under anesthesia for the procedure. We use a needle to insert the microchip under their skin, typically between the shoulder blades. The device is no bigger than a grain of rice and provides your pet with a lifetime of protection in a matter of moments.

How do I know if my pet’s microchip is still working?

If you have concerns about your pet’s microchip after it’s implanted, we can scan it to ensure it’s in working condition. Checking your pet’s microchip can ease any anxieties you have and give you peace of mind. In addition to microchips, it’s also important to keep your pet’s collar and tags up-to-date with your contact information.
